Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is considered the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. This marks the date on June 19, 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to inform people who were enslaved of their freedom.
In honor of this day, we released two special messages. Arete Living President Sarah Silva released a message to employees, residents, and their families in remembrance of Juneteenth and invited readers to celebrate and learn.
Author Joél Leon shared with us the significance of Juneteenth and the strength we possess to shape a more equitable future. Read his Q&A on the blog!
