Dear team members,

We are mourning together, as a country, following the untimely and tragic death of Tyre Nichols.

Tyre, a 29-year-old Black man, was beaten by police and died from his injuries three days later on January 10, 2023 in Memphis, Tennessee. Five officers were fired and charged with second-degree murder, along with other charges. Video footage of this horrific event was released January 27, 2023, bringing to light another example of police brutality. Cases like this prove that, as a nation, we still have much progress to make.

Conversations surrounding the events are happening in cities, homes, and in the workplace across the United States. At Arete Living and within all our communities, our core values remain our navigation system. Therefore, we expect these discussions to be approached with sensitivity for each other, as we uphold our core value of building “a culture of trust and respect” for all. We encourage you to continue listening and learning from each other during these difficult times.

If you find you or someone on your team needs additional support, we have mental health resources available through Canopy. With our Employee Assistance Program, you can access free counseling services. Please reach out to Lee Kaiser, Director of Human Resources, for additional Canopy resources and visit CanopyWell.org.

Together we can create spaces where people feel respected and valued. Thank you for your commitment to this important work.
